Nuestra Señora de la Soledad de Porta Vaga, also called “Reina de Cavite” and “La Virgen de la Soledad”, is the patroness of Cavite City, also the Patroness of the Galleon.
The image is painted on a canvas. An inscription at the back says “A doze de Abril 1692 años Juan Oliba puso esta Stma. Ymagen Haqui,” which means, “This sacred image was placed by Juan Oliba on 12 April 1692.”
Mama Mary is depicted as Birheng Dolorosa, garbed in black and white attire, seems on her knees, in front are the crown of thorns and the nails of Christ’s Crucifixion.
This Marian icon was used to bless the galleons plying Cavite and Acapulco (Mexico) on formal sending off ceremonies. This is the oldest existing dated Marian painting in the Philippines.
Viva, La Virgen de la Soledad is coming at St. John the Baptist Parish in Taytay this Sunday before the 12:00 noon Holy Mass, July 20!
